Why I Love This Business!
I have been in the Musical Instrument Industry for more than 30 years. I loved it when I first got into it and I still love it. It is really part of a larger journey for me, which is the path of music. The reason that a lot of us got into this business is because of our Lifelong Journey with music. The process of writing, studying, playing or listening to music is a real treasure in this world. The Players, Manufacturers, and Retailers are all part of the Story.

Peter Gabriel said this:

“One thing that really appeals to me is this idea of music being a living thing that has an evolution that, in a way, enables the artist to sell a process rather than a piece of product.”

This philosophy embodies the values and principles that I believe in. We are all involved in a process, a journey. What we are all doing together as a musical community has meaning and value beyond the actual product of a Composition or a Concert or a New Flute.

We are all involved in a lifelong commitment to exploration and discovery and that process makes us better, it makes the world better. What we do is important.

When people draw distinctions between Amateur and Professional or between Player and Maker - - - I understand that. For me, there is nonetheless a sense of community. It is music that teaches us about harmony and dynamics and meaning - - - and I find those in my Work and in my Music and in my Community.

The People and the Art -That’s why I love this business!.

McKenna History

200 years ago my ancestor Sebastien Erard developed the double escapement for piano and also invented the double movement pedal harp mechanism pioneering both the modern harp and modern piano. His pianos were notably used by BeethovenChopinFauré, HaydnLiszt, MendelssohnVerdi, Ravel and other famous soloists and composers. My name, Christopher Erard Mckenna, reflects the tradition of the men of the family carrying the name forward as their middle name.

From an early age I had an interest in making and inventing machines, mechanisms and instruments. I went on to study music and composition with some of the greats in the St. Louis Symphony nurturing the passion for music and musical instruments that I have to this day.

It was the gift of being exposed to these things at an early age that led to my philosophy that it is the partnership of Great Teachers, Players and Instruments that elevate the art of music.

After going to college in Boston I became part of the Boston Flutemaking Community. This tradition flows from the vintage to modern including Haynes, Powell, Brannen, Burkart, Mckenna, Nagahara, Sheridan, Williams, Abel, Lunn, Lopatin, Landell and others.

Having learned with the greats and having had a varied career in Boston Flutemaking for more than 30 years I consider all these companies to be members of a community rather than competitors. I continue to respect and to be inspired by great instruments and artistry wherever I find them.

In cooperation with others who understand the importance and value of music I continue this journey of instrument making. The partnership with Instrument Makers and Retailers, Teachers and Players keeps this Tradition alive through the Evolution of the Art.

The Legacy of Vintage and Heirloom Quality Instruments has contributed to the careers of many of the top players from all over the world. Quality, Innovation and Artistry are the principles that created this legacy and guided the Next Generation in bringing this American Heritage to the World Stage.
